Kaenon Avalon Polarized Sunglasses – $125

Chuck Peña PEZ sez: Not every gift for your favorite cyclist has to be cycling-specific. With the current trend towards oversized (bordering on ski google sized), cycling sunglasses may be functional for riding but aren't always the best look off the bike (my compadre Ed Hood makes a reasonable case that they may not even be the best look for some on the bike). Part of Kaenon's Essentials collection, their Avalon Polarized Sunglasses definitely fit the bill for non-riding occasions.

The Avalon is available in a variety of frame/lens combinations to suit your fashion tastes. Whatever you choose, the styling is classic/timeless and well suited for both men and women. PEZ got the Avalon in matte turquoise with green mirror lenses. As someone who was born and raised in the Golden State, the term that comes to mind is "California cool."

But the Avalon is more than just stylish. They are very lightweight (spec is 29 grams) and the optics of the polarized lenses are crystal clear (Kaenon has a lifetime warranty on their SR-91® lenses). I really liked the tint (NOTE: the green mirror lenses are a brown tint but Kaenon has other lenses with a grey tint) in direct, bright sunlight. Plus the polarized lenses reduce glare and make colors pop a little more. Polarized lenses are also often times better for people whose eyes are more sensitive to bright light (like my wife).

Billed as lifestyle sunglasses, the Avalon is great for a wide variety of everyday use — driving, hanging out at the pool, morning coffee on you deck/patio, walking on the beach, going for a hike, a casual bike ride, an urban stroll, sitting at a sidewalk cafe. For me, they’re perfect for being casually deliberate sipping Negronis.
